The Committee of 100 on the Federal City has been a strong advocate for the Metro system since its early planning in the 1950s and an active proponent of mass transit for the Washington Metropolitan area. In the 1950′s and 1960′s, the Committee successfully opposed the development of a freeway system through the city.

Transportation planning is an integral part of the Comprehensive Plan for the National Capital and a tool to achieve the goals of the Plan. Toward this end, the Transportation Sub-Committee of the Committee of 100 studies and supports sound transportation planning that promotes livability and compliments the organization’s mission of preserving and enhancing Washington’s historic and natural assets.

The Transportation Sub-Committee will advise the Board and membership in its ongoing efforts to connect all parts of the city and to reduce the impacts of commuter traffic. Some areas of focus may include multi-modal mass transit services improvements and enhancements; capital infrastructure improvements; bicycle and pedestrian mobility; the interconnectivity of transportation corridors; and the cost effectiveness of various approaches to transportation goals.
